LAP to train intervenors on March 23

The Lawyers' Assistance Program will conduct a volunteer training session from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, March 23, in the 14th floor conference center at 20 S. Clark, Chicago.

Participants will hear about LAP services, gain better understanding of substance addictions and mental health problems, and learn how to provide peer support for colleagues who need help.

The techniques of the intervention process will be explained for new volunteers as well as previously trained intervenors and peer counselors who should improve their skills.

There is no charge to attend the training session, but advance reservations should be made by calling executive director Janet Piper Voss at (312) 726-6607. Luncheon will be provided.

“LAP is a prime example of the good that comes when those within a profession are concerned for their fellow professionals,” said President Gerald R. Walters. “Participants will learn how to identify problems early and discover tools for handling problems effectively.”

Walters added that in anticipation of increasing requests for assistance, LAP is placing a high priority on outreach to the legal community and preparation of a skilled response team.

Established in 1980 by the Illinois State Bar and Chicago Bar Associations, the program helps lawyers, judges and law students, and their families, to overcome alcohol abuse, drug dependency and mental health issues.

About 300 trained volunteers throughout the state work with LAP staff members and a 14-member board, appointed by the Illinois Supreme Court, to provide confidential assistance to legal professionals.
