Associations Defenders plan spring event The Illinois Public Defender Association will conduct its annual spring seminar on Friday and Saturday, May 5-6, at the Holiday Inn, Urbana. The seminar will begin at 12:30 p.m. Friday with welcoming remarks from President Randall B. Cunningham, Cham-paign County public defender and member of the ISBA Criminal Justice Section Council. Sessions throughout the afternoon will cover post-conviction petitions, how to handle the press, sexually violent and dangerous person cases, and federal and state case law update. Speakers include Mary Schenk of the News-Gazette, Waukegan attorney Dwayne Douglas, and David Bergschneider, legal director for the Office of State Appellate Defender. After a 5:30 p.m. reception and 6:30 p.m. dinner, Cook County Judge Thomas M. Donnelly will speak. He serves on the ISBA Civil Practice and Procedure Section Council and the Committee on Professional Conduct. At 9:15 a.m. Saturday, Robert Burke of the Office of State Appellate Defender's Death Penalty Trial Assistance Program will discuss DNA for beginners. At 10:40 a.m., assistant Cook County public defender Stephen W. Baker, a member of the ISBA Criminal Justice Section Council, will provide a legislative update. The seminar will conclude at 12 noon. A range of all-inclusive tuition, room and meal fees are available from $175 to $240 per person. Attendance at just the seminar and dinner is $100, or $75 for seminar only. Women's History Month The Women's Bar Association of Illinois is a co-sponsor of a Women's History Month courthouse tour of the Richard J. Daley Center, Chicago, that will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, March 27, in the west lobby. “The tour offers the public a sense of the day-to-day operations of one of the nation's largest unified court systems,” said Chief Judge Timothy C.
