The ISBA Civil Practice and Procedure Section will conduct seminars on Friday, April 28, at the Chicago Athletic Association, and Friday, May 12, at the Hawthorn Suites, Bloomington.

Traffic law panel slated in Bloomington

The second of two ISBA Traffic Law Updates will be conducted Friday, March 24, at the Hawthorn Suites, Bloomington, by the Traffic Laws and Courts Section.

Justice Karmeier speaks at workshop on lawyering

Illinois Supreme Court Justice Lloyd A. Karmeier of Nashville will serve on the faculty for an ISBA Law Ed seminar titled “The Lawyer's Workshop: Effective Lawyering on Contemporary Issues in Contemporary Times.”

The presentation of the Committee on Minority and Women Participation will take place from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, April 7, at the Holiday Inn, Collinsville.

Program coordinator and moderator is committee member Jennifer A. Shaw of Edwardsville, who also serves on the Human Rights Section Council and Committee on Delivery of Legal Services, and is secretary of the Committee on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity.

After a welcome and introductions by Shaw, Justice Karmeier will provide brief remarks before joining the 9:15 a.m. panel discussion, A View from the Bench: Best Practices in Appellate Advocacy.

Other panelists are Appellate Justices Melissa A. Chapman of the 5th District, Glen Carbon, and Sue E. Myerscough of the 4th District, Springfield.

At 10:15 a.m., assistant Madison County state's attorney Christine S. P. Kovach of Edwardsville will discuss Family Law: Change in Calculation of Interest on Child Support.

Bankruptcy reform impact after one year is reviewed

A review of bankruptcy reforms that took effect last year will be presented from 9 a.m. to 12 noon Friday, April 28, at the Hotel Pere Marquette, Peoria, by the ISBA Commercial, Banking and Bankruptcy Law Section.

The Law Ed seminar, titled “Bankruptcy Reform in Practice: One Year After Passage,” will include observations by federal bankruptcy judges and trustees.

‘Other side' of med-mal reform aired

Clarifying perspectives on the professional legal-medical dichotomy will be offered next month in the ISBA Law Ed seminar, “Medical Malpractice Reform: The Other Side of the Coin.”

The Health Care Section is the sponsor of the presentation that will take place from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Friday, April 21, in the ISBA Chicago Regional Office.

Section council chair Guy C. Hall of Dob--bins, Fraker, Tennant, Joy & Perlstein, Champaign, is program coordinator and moderator.

William K. McVisk of Johnson & Bell, Chicago, will open the program with Physician, Insurer and Legal Counsel Relationship, a summary of the interests that may be at variance between the insurer and the insured. He also will address the potential impact of new rules regarding physician profiling.

Beginning at 9:45 a.m., two speakers will provide their views on the Insurance Coverage Climate.

Robert Wagner, chief counsel of the Illinois Division of Insurance, Chicago, will discuss activities of the division in relation to insurance pricing and coverage issues in light of the reform act.

James Tarrant, executive director of the Chicago Medical Society, will review the changing environment and cost concerns among physicians in obtaining medical malpractice coverage.

At 10:40 a.m., Theresa A. Hoban, vice president and general counsel of Northwest Community Hospital, Arlington Heights, will explain how “Sorry” Works – utilization of an honest apology in the risk-management context.

She also will cover the terms and potential impact of new legislation, JCAHO considerations, staff training, transfer of protocol into the clinical setting, practical tips, and a proposed pilot project.

At 11:20 a.m., the issues involved in Physician Profiling will be aired by section council member Gerald C. Goldberg of Goldberg & Frankenstein, Chicago. His remarks will include new requirements in the professional regulation arena, along with practical tips and potential pitfalls.

The seminar will conclude with a question-and-answer period at 12 noon.

Academy aids women's careers

A two-day Women in Law Leadership Academy will be conducted Thursday and Friday, March 30-31, at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place Hotel, Chicago.

The Illinois State Bar Association is a co-spon--sor, along with the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession, the ABA Section of Litigation and the ABA Young Lawyers Division.

Designed to help women lawyers with 10 years or less in practice to build career and legal skills, sessions will be strong on content and focused on practical, concrete advice and guidance.

Keynote speakers are Gloria Santona, executive vice president and general counsel for the McDonald's Corp., at 12:45 p.m. Thursday, and Mary Cranston, chair of Pillsbury Winthrop, at 1 p.m. Friday.

Thursday afternoon plenary topics are Taking Charge of Your Leadership, and Getting the Most out of Your Legal Career.

A Friday morning plenary, Creating Your Own Personal Leadership Plan, will be followed by breakout sessions on Rising to the Lead Lawyer, and Effective Strategies for Business Development.
