Avoid being ARDC statistic, hear ethics advice April 20 The names of 26 attorneys, subjects of disciplinary orders filed Jan. 12 by the Illinois Supreme Court, were listed in the February issue of the ISBA Bar News. Sanctions ranged from reprimands to disbarments for various types of misconduct. The Supreme Court has disciplined an average of 140 attorneys annually in the past five reporting periods, resulting from an average of 6,094 complaints filed with the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission (ARDC). While 94 percent of the docketed investigations were closed summarily by the administrator in 2005, others faced scrutiny by the Inquiry Board, Hearing Board and Review Board before 167 remaining matters were acted on by the court. The ISBA Committee on the ARDC will provide information and helpful guidance about the disciplinary process during a Law Ed seminar on Friday, April 20, in the Gateway Center, Collinsville. The faculty for “Practical Ethics Advice: From ARDC Complaints to Courtroom Dilemmas” includes Peter L. Rotskoff of Springfield, senior counsel of the ARDC and member of the Committee on Legal Education, Admission and Competence; Paul Hendren of Champaign, chair of the ARDC Hearing Board, and 3rd Circuit Judge Ellar Duff of Edwardsville. Other participants are Gawain Charlton-Perrin of Chicago, secretary of the Committee on the ARDC; ISBA Assembly member Charles J. Northrup of Springfield; Michael P. Downey of St. Louis, who serves on the Committee on Professional Conduct, and David Jones of Peoria. Topics include complaint intake and development, responding to and defending complaints, Hearing Board proceedings, prosecution and defense issues, ethical and courtroom dilemmas, and conflicts involving small firms, solo practitioners and laterals. Seminar attendance provides 5.0 hours of MCLE credit, and the ISBA also will apply for 5.0 hours of Professionalism MCLE.
