Highlights of new seminars Highlights follow of unique content of ISBA Law Ed seminars that have been added recently to the spring schedule. Elder Law: April 6 In “Estate Planning Assessing a Client's Capacity,” at the UBS Tower Conference Center in Chicago, two experts from the medical profession are among faculty members. XinQi Dong, M.D., assistant professor in geriatrics at Rush University Medical Center, Chicago, will explain tools for Medical Assessment of Dementia. Robert E. Hanlon, Ph.D., associate professor of psychiatry and neurology at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago, will discuss Neuropsychological Assessment: Understanding Brain Disorders and Testing. Other speakers are section council member Kerry R. Peck, past chair Susan Dawson-Tibbits and secretary Charles A. LeFebvre. Custody Mediation: April 13 Three section councils will sponsor “Mediation of Child Custody and Visitation Issues” at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum in Springfield – Alternative Dispute Resolution, Family Law, and Bench and Bar. Speakers include ADR Section Council vice chair Stanley N. Wasser, Howard W. Feldman of the Family Law Section Council, and Donald C. Hammer, who served on both councils. Banking Law: April 20 The presentation of the Commercial, Banking and Bankruptcy Law Section at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Springfield, will be repeated April 27 at Northern Illinois University in Rockford. Topics include financial privacy, mortgage foreclosure, collection procedures, security interests ion non-traditional collateral, bank exams by regulators, and audit attorney letters. Speakers include section council chair Stephen R. Olson, past chair Timothy J. Howard, and members Michael G. Cortina, Samuel H. Levine, David L. Wentworth, Adela C. Lucchesi and Michael A. Stanfa. Real Estate Law: April 25 A program on Construction Law at the DoubleTree Hotel in Bloomington will be repeated May 2 at the Northern Illinois University campus in Hoffman Estates. Topics range from pre-construction issues, to drafting contracts and handling details of closings. Litigation and arbitration processes on mechanics liens, defective construction, non-payment, insolvency and fraud are included. Speakers include section council members Myles L. Jacobs, Michael L. English, William J. Anaya, Andrew C. Dystrup, Margery Newman, Samuel H. Levine and Anne L. Fredd. Family Law/Bench and Bar A video replay of the continuing presentation on “Education for Attorneys in Child Custody Matters” will take place April 26 and 27 at the Western Illinois University Union, Macomb. It will be accompanied by a live program of moderators and commentators, including 9th Circuit Associate Judges Richard H. Gambrell of Carthage and Patricia A. Walton of Macomb. Corporate Law: May 11 “Drafting and Negotiating Commercial Contracts for Larger Corporations: An Insiders and Outsiders View” will be covered in the ISBA Chicago Regional Office. The Corporate Law Departments and Corporation, Securities and Business Law Sections invite all attorneys in various types of practices to attend this useful seminar, which features remarks by several in-house counsel on relationships with outside counsel. Corporate Law Departments Section Council panelists are chair Mary K. W. Jones, past chair Frances S. Cook, secretary Peter M. Lasorsa, and member Meredith E. Ritchie. Legal Writing: June 1 Prof. Gregory G. Colomb of the University of Virginia English Department will be back to explain more essentials of “Effective Legal Writing.” He will cover clear and direct prose, informative and persuasive documents during his Masters Series presentation at the DoubleTree Hotel in Bloomington. |
