ISSUE STATEMENT: As a law professor I would bring something to the Board that is currently missing. There should be a stronger relationship between law schools and the practicing bar because both groups would benefit. I also believe that the bar association is a place where all persons should feel welcome, no matter what race, religion, or sexual orientation. Diversity must be more than an empty slogan and should be reflected in the bar association at all levels of leadership. My extensive experience with other bar associations also allows me to draw upon successful projects that the ISBA should undertake. Above all, the bar association must ensure that all members find value in their ISBA membership, in its programs, policies, and publications.Board of Governors – Area 2 (17th, 19th, 22nd Circuits)

Illinois Judicial Conference, since 2002; Alternative Dispute Resolution Coordinating Committee, since 2002; seminar presenter. Illinois Court Improvement Project Judicial Advisory Committee, since 2004. Ford County Bar Association, since 1974, president, 1991-97. Illinois Judges Association: Member since 1996; Board of Directors since 2002. ISSUE STATEMENT: ISBA represents all Illinois attorneys, but its primary focus should be to serve the small firms and solo practitioners who make up the overwhelming majority of the membership. Protecting the role of attorneys in real estate transactions, estate planning and other areas where the unauthorized practice of law has encroached is an important priority. Continued and improved services such as legal research, insurance programs, continuing legal education, and publications are vital to the profession.WILLIAM A. PEITHMANN,
Farmer City. University of Illinois/University of Denver law schools (J.D., 1978). Sole practitioner, with emphasis on estate planning, wealth management, real estate and tax. Martindale-Hubbell “AV” rating since 1994. ATG issuing member. Silver Fellow and past director, Illinois Bar Foundation (1997-1998, 2000-2003). American Bar Association: Real Prop. Prob. & Tr. Tax Counsel to the firm of Mahoney, Silverman and Cross (Joliet). Admitted to practice in Colorado, Illinois and California. Sometimes writes and lectures on obscure stuff for the ABA, IICLE, ISBA Law Ed, Colorado Bar Association and other groups when they can't find anyone else who is better and will still work for free. Likes to wander around, climb up, ski down and occasionally fall off mountains. Elected to the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel in 1994; listed in "The Best Lawyers in America" since 1999. ISSUE STATEMENT: Profitability for small firms and solos is evaporating. Many are closing their doors, which in turn erodes the public's faith in us as dependable pillars of the civic community. On a Board already fully representative of financially secure administrators and judges, the small firm/practicing bar needs an advocate--a practicing lawyer who knows just how much a photocopier costs, and who will energetically respond to the growing non-lawyer competition, the staggering weight of overhead expenses, and the stranglehold on allowable fees that threaten our ability to survive and serve. If re-elected I promise to do my very best to do a good job.JEFFREY D. RICHARDSON,
Decatur. Sole practitioner, general civil and appellate practice. Education: Undergraduate degree from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale; University of Illinois College of Law, J.D. 1977. Member, Decatur Bar Association, 1977-present (president 1999-2000); 2004 recipient of Decatur Bar Association's Russel D. Hoerbert Pro Bono Award; 1999 recipient (with former partner) of ISBA's John C. McAndrews Pro Bono Service Special Commendation. ISSUE STATEMENT: My commitment to the ISBA comes from my belief in an association which is itself committed to providing meaningful services to its members and has never lost sight of the needs and evolving challenges facing its core membership, lawyers in small law firms or solo practitioners, like myself. As a practicing attorney, I am concerned about both the decline in the public's perception of our profession and the influx of non-lawyers who provide legal services to the public without being licensed to practice law. I appreciate current ISBA efforts to create a positive image advertising campaign. As to the latter issue, I am trying to help do something about the problem by continuing to serve on the Task Force on Unauthorized Practice of Law.
