Gallo earns Freedom Award

Alfred E. Gallo, president of the John Marshall Law School board since 2000 and a member since 1970, received the annual Freedom Award from the JMLS Alumni Association during a May 12 luncheon.

ISBA Assembly member Katherine A. Amari of Amari & Locallo, Chicago, received one of five Distinguished Service Awards. She also serves on the ISBA Young Lawyers Division Council and the State and Local Taxation Section Council.

Other recipients are Cook County public administrator Michael Ian Bender, DuPage County State's Attorney Joseph E. Birkett, Shannon M. Cobe, president of the Illinois Native American Bar Association, and Anna H. Demacopoulos, supervisor of the state's attorney's Narcotics Felony Trial Unit.

JMLS center marks 65th

The 65th anniversary of the John Marshall Law School's Center for Intel-lectual Property Law will be celebrated next month during its 50th annual Conference on Developments in Intellectual Property.

The conference will be conducted from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday, May 25-26. For details, call Michele Bridges at (312) 427-2737, ext. 581.

The center also will conduct a 12-week summer series on Domestic and Foreign Patent, Trademark, Trade Secret and Copyright Documentation. These programs will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays from June 6 through Aug. 22.

SIU airs health care

The SIU Center for Health Law and Policy will conduct its eighth annual Health Policy Institute, “Consumer-Directed Health Care: Legal and Policy Implications,” from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday, May 19. Call (618) 453-8636.

The keynote speaker at 9:15 a.m. is Prof. Regina E. Herzlinger of Harvard Business School. Moderators are center co-directors Marshall B. Kapp and W. Eugene Basanta, newsletter editor for the ISBA Health Care Section.

NIU professor honored

Prof. David H. Taylor has been named a Presidential Teaching Professor at Northern Illinois University. He is the first member of the NIU College of Law faculty to receive this distinction.

A 1980 graduate of the Washington University School of Law, Taylor has taught at NIU since 1992 after several years with Prairie State Legal Services. He is director of skills training, supervising attorneys and law students at the Zeke Giorgi Legal Clinic in Rockford.
