Cancer claims Barbara Badger

Associate Judge Barbara Jean Badger of Joliet in the 12th Circuit, a resident of New Lenox, died April 11 at age 55 of cancer. Chief Judge Stephen D. White called her a watchdog against waste of taxpayer dollars.

A 1976 graduate of The John Marshall Law School, Ms. Badger was an assistant Will County state's attorney for four years and an assistant public defender for eight years in addition to private practice. She was county public defender from 1990 to 1995.

She was appointed to the bench in 1995 and earned a reputation for toughness in juvenile court. By jailing youths who refused to attend school, she reduced truancy.

Macon Arthur

Retired Chicago attorney Macon Mich-aux Arthur died April 9 at age 84. He had lived in Pawley Island, S.C., since 1984 and was a director of the Arthur State Bank in Union.

A graduate of the University of Virginia Law School who was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1961, Mr. Arthur practiced in Washington, D.C. and Paris, France, before joining Mayer, Brown & Platt in Chicago.

He served with the Army in the Philippines and in Europe during World War II and was a retired major in the Army Reserves.

Arthur Berlin

Retired Chicago attorney Arthur E. Berlin died April 12 at age 79 of Non-Hodgkins lymphoma in Evanston Hospi-tal. A 1949 graduate of the University of Chicago Law School and founding partner in Berlin & Braude, he left full-time practice in 1991.

In retirement, Mr. Berlin volunteered with the Over the Rainbow Association, developing independent housing for people with severe disabilities; Meals at Home, which serves the homebound, and the Chicago Lighthouse Community Land Trust for affordable housing.

Paul Bolton

Paul L. Bolton of Lombard, a 1964 graduate of the DePaul University College of Law who was not admitted to the Illinois bar, died March 18 at age 67. He was a retired trust attorney for First National Bank of Chicago.

Mr. Bolton was a volunteer in the addiction wards at Good Samaritan Hospital.

Gary Bozick

Chicago trial attorney Gary Wayne Bozick died April 22 at age 56 of leukemia. A 1974 graduate of the DePaul University College of Law, he was a partner in Hoffman, Burke & Bozick.

A member of the Pleasantdale School Board in Burr Ridge from 1991 to 2004, Mr. Bozick served as president for eight years. He received an Award of Excellence from the Illinois State Board of Education in 2004.

Arthur Curtis

Retired Chicago attorney Arthur Rudolph Curtis died April 13 at age 90 in Traverse City, Mich., where he had lived since 1986 and was of counsel to Bishop & Heintz.

A 1940 graduate of the Yale University Law School, Mr. Curtis served in the Army Air Corps during World War II before joining the legal department of Swift & Co. He retired from Swift in 1980 and joined Chadwell & Kayser.

Thomas Dombkowski

Former Chicago attorney Thomas Ray-mond Dombkowski died April 20 at age 55 in his home of pancreatitis. He had been HIV-positive for several years.

A 1977 graduate of the DePaul Univer-sity College of Law, studying at night while working as a revenue officer for the Internal Revenue Service. He became an IRS executive after receiving his law degree.

In 1985, after his partner died of AIDS, Mr. Dombkowski left the IRS to establish Chicago House, the city's first residential facility for AIDS patients. He was executive director for six years before joining the Chicago Department of Public Health.

Director of the AIDS grant management office for eight years, he served on the Mayor's Committee on Gay and Lesbian Issues, which later became an advisory council to the Commission on Human Relations.

A co-founder, co-chair and treasurer of the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame, Mr. Dombrowski was inducted as an honoree in 1992. For many years, he was chief judge of the Mr. Leather competition.

James Fox

Chicago attorney James L. Fox died April 14 at age 85 of heart disease in Evanston Hospital. He was a 1956 graduate of the Loyola University School of Law.

Mr. Fox was an executive of Fox Deluxe Foods when he was appointed in 1952 by Gov. Adlai Stevenson as superintendent of the Illinois Division of Foods and Dairies. Nine months later, he was ousted when the administration changed.

While in private practice in 1963, Mr. Fox joined the law firm that became Abrahamson & Fox. He became of counsel in 2004.

Larry Frantz

Former Peoria attorney Larry Thomas Frantz died March 20 at age 57 in his Peoria Heights home. Admitted to the Illinois bar in 1974, he represented the Journal Star newspaper at one time.

Paul Hamer

Retired Northbrook attorney Paul Eugene Hamer Sr. died April 15 at age 81 of heart disease in his Deerfield home. A 1952 graduate of the DePaul University College of Law, he served in Navy hospitals during World War II and the Korean War.

Mr. Hamer was former village attorney for Wheeling and Brookfield, and an arbitrator in Cook County and 19th Circuit courts.

Milton Hansen

Milton C. Hansen of Madison, Wis., a 1953 graduate of the Loyola University School of Law who was not admitted to the Illinois bar, died March 26 at age 89. He was an Army officer during World War II.

Employed as a chemist while studying law in evening classes, Mr. Hansen was a patent attorney for Quaker Oats in Barrington from 1956 to 1979.

After helping to start a community college in Palatine, he was elected to the first board of trustees of William Rainey Harper College. He served from 1964 to 1973 and was board chair for two years.

Thomas Joyce

Former Chicago attorney Thomas Ed-ward Joyce died April 23 at age 97 in a Bradenton, Fla., hospice. Born in Ireland, he settled in Chicago at age 14 with his mother.

After tuberculosis ended a promising career as a boxer, Mr. Joyce entered the DePaul University College of Law and coached the university boxing team. He graduated in 1934 and was an assistant Illinois attornegeneral before entering private practice.


Maxwell Lubershane

Retired Chicago attorney Maxwell Lubershane died April 7 at age 86 in St. Louis. A 1951 graduate of the DePaul University College of Law, he had served in the Army Air Corps in North Africa and Europe during World War II.

Mr. Lubershane participated in four amphibious invasions and the liberation of Rome, and received a Bronze Star.

Survivors include a brother-in-law, Elias Levin of Frank & Levin, Glencoe.

Bruce Mitchell

Marion attorney Bruce Walker Mitchell died March 24 at age 55 in his home of spinal bone cancer. He had received a liver transplant in 2003. A 1982 graduate of the University of Tulsa Law School, he was a partner in Mitchell, Mitchell & Bradley.

Survivors include his father, Marion attorney J. C. Mitchell.

Michael Parisi

Park Ridge attorney Michael Parisi died in April at age 76. Born in Italy, he was a 1959 graduate of the DePaul University College of Law.

A veteran of service during the Korean War, Mr. Parisi was a past president of the Italian Catholic Federation.

William Rudert

Vienna attorney William J. M. Rudert died March 21 at age 58 in a St. Louis hospital. He served in the Army artillery during the Vietnam War and was employed by the Beck Vocational Centers in St. Clair County before entering law.

A 1984 graduate of the Southern Illinois University School of Law, Mr. Rudert practiced in Waterloo, Lawrenceville and Anna before opening an office in Vienna in 1987.

He was an assistant Johnson County state's attorney from 1989 to 1992, and had served as county public defender since 1996. He also was Vienna city attorney for 14 years, and was instrumental in creating the city park.

Charles Ruth

Retired 18th Circuit associate judge Charles Edward Ruth died April 9 at age 76 of pulmonary fibrosis in his Hinsdale home. He was the grandson of former DuPage County judge Linus C. Ruth.

A 1970 graduate of The John Marshall Law School, where he attended night classes while working as an adjuster for Allstate Insurance, Mr. Ruth had served in the Army during the Korean War.

He was an assistant DuPage County state's attorney until his appointment to the bench in the early 1980s. He retired in 1994.

Antonio Sarabia

Retired Chicago attorney Antonio Rosas Sarabia died recently at age 92. Born in Mexico, he was a 1950 graduate of the University of Chicago Law School.

Mr. Sarabia was a partner in Baker & McKenzie and later with Lord, Bissell & Brook.

Paul Wigoda

Chicago attorney Paul Theodor Wigoda died in April at age 83. A 1950 graduate of the DePaul University College of Law, he was of counsel to Wigoda & Wigoda.

Survivors include three sons – William S. Wigoda of Jakubs Kritzmire & Wigoda; Gary I. Wigoda and Robert M. Wigoda of Wigoda & Wigoda – and a daughter-in-law, Linda J. Jakubs.
