Bar leaders convene May 18 for trends, issues updates

The two-day ISBA Bar Leadership Conference will begin at 2 p.m. Friday, May 18, at the Renaissance Hotel Convention Center in Schaumburg with a pair of simultaneous track presentations.

Registration for bar association leaders will begin at 10 a.m., and conference attendees may attend a luncheon with members of the ISBA Board of Governors at 12:30 p.m.

Track I at 2 p.m. Friday, Hot Topics Facing Bar Leaders, will focus on “Staying Abreast of Emerging Issues and Changing News Within the Legal Profession.”

Track II, Trends in Print and Electronic Publications, will cover “Choosing the Right Communications Channel Is More Important than Ever.”

Track I topic at 3:30 p.m. is Getting the Attention You Deserve: Media Relations for Bar Leaders, “Learn How to Deal with Print and TV Reporters in Getting Your Message Out.”

Track II topic is Keeping Your Association Legal, “Learn About Fiduciary Responsibility and Governance.”

A complimentary networking reception for bar association officers, board members and executive directors from 6 to 9 p.m. includes food from Chicago neighborhoods, and blues and jazz music.

The conference will resume at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, May 19, with continental breakfast, followed by an 8 a.m. plenary session on “Passing the Leadership Baton and Winning the Race.”

The interactive session on Thanking the Veterans, Teaching the Rookies and Taking Everyone to the Next Level will be facilitated by Robert Shaver of the University of Wisconsin. The presentation is sponsored by the ISBA Mutual Insurance Co.

Concurrent breakout sessions at 10:15 a.m. are for leaders of larger bar associations (175-plus members) and of smaller bar associations. President Bahr will address the concluding luncheon at 12 noon.

Conference co-chairs are Kimberly J. Anderson, secretary of the ISBA Committee on Bar Services and Activities, and David B. Sosin, a member of the committee and president of the Illinois Bar Foundation.
