New ISBA pamphlet covers rights of gays A new ISBA public service pamphlet, “Rights of Gays, Lesbians, BiSexual and Transgender,” was announced during a meeting of the Committee on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity on April 20 in St. Louis. The committee was host at a reception for members of Lawyers for Equality and law students from Washington University and St. Louis University. The pamphlet briefly describes legal rights under Illinois law and provides basic answers to common questions. Readers are urged to consult attorneys for more detailed information. Among the questions are: Am I protected if I am discriminated against because of my sexual orientation? Am I protected if I am discriminated against because of my gender identity? Other issues include adoptions, split-ups of same-sex parents, domestic partner relationships, marriages in other states, employment benefits, medical and financial decisions, hate crimes, domestic violence, and harassment at work. Copies of the pamphlet are free to individuals and may be purchased in bulk by ISBA members for display or distribution. For information, access www.isba.org. The ISBA publishes and periodically updates 14 other public service pamphlets and five booklets on topics from Advice to Newly Marrieds, to Buying a Home, to Your Rights if Arrested. A complete list of available titles and purchasing information may be accessed on the Web site by clicking on ISBA Bookstore under Publications.
