Traffic law panels slated 3 days in June Three consecutive days of ISBA seminars on traffic law issues related to the courts and secretary of state are scheduled next month. The 42nd annual Illinois Traffic Court Conference, co-sponsored by the ISBA Traffic Laws and Courts Section, will take place Thursday and Friday, June 7-8, at Bradley University in Peoria. The Law Ed seminar, “Nuts and Bolts: Representing Your Client in Drivers Licensing Issues at SOS,” will be conducted Saturday, June 9, at The Carlisle in Lombard. Summaries follow of the two programs.
Traffic Court Conference The annual conference will begin at 10 a.m. June 7 with registration and breakfast, and the program begins at 10:45 a.m. with introductory remarks. An ethics discussion at 11 a.m. will precede the provided lunch. Afternoon topics from 1 to 4 p.m. are New and Pending Litigation; DUI Alcohol/Drug Evaluation Standards and Procedures; Pharmacologic Experts: Dealing with Chemically Impaired Charges. A 6 p.m. reception and 7 p.m. dinner are scheduled at the Hotel Pere Marquette. Beginning at 9 a.m. June 8 with introductions, the conference will continue with a DUI and Summary Suspension panel and discussion of Recent Revisions in Chemical Testing Rules. Lunch will be provided at 12:15 p.m. At 1:15 p.m., Cook County Judge Daniel M. Drivers Licensing Issues The ISBA seminar on June 9 is sponsored by the Administrative Law Section and co-sponsored by the General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Section and the Committee on Delivery of Legal Services. It is MCLE accredited for 6.75 hours, and an addition 0.5 hours of Professional MCLE will be applied for. Program coordinator is Administrative Law Judge Edward J. Schoenbaum of Springfield. After introductions at 8:30 a.m. by James W. Chipman, chair of the Administrative Law Section Council, the following topics will be discussed during morning sessions. Overview of Procedures in Administrative Driver's License Proceedings; How One Loses Driving Privileges: Differences Between a Suspension and Revocation; Process and Proof Needed to Get Driving Privileges Restored: A Hearing Is Not Required in Every Case. Also, Safety and Financial Responsibility Suspensions, and Breath Alcohol Interlock Device Program. A lunch break will follow at 12 noon. The program will resume at 1 p.m. with Evidence in Implied Consent Hearings; New Laws on Commercial Driver's Licensing; Handling Multiple Offenders with Out-of-State Convictions; Use of the Federally Mandated Problem Driver Point System. The final session, Ethical Issues in Representing Clients in Secretary of State Matters, will conclude at 4:30 p.m. |
