Red Mass lauds judge's courage

Judge Joan Humphrey Lefkow of U.S. District Court for the Northern District will be honored Sunday, Nov. 19, by the St. Thomas More Society of DuPage County for her courage and devotion to duty.

She will receive an award during the society's third annual Red Mass at 12 noon in St. Michael Church, 315 W. Illinois, Wheaton. Bishop J. Peter Sartain will preside.

A posthumous award will be presented in memory of Shane Mahaffee, a Waukegan attorney and Army captain who died May 12 during active duty in Iraq (ISBA Bar News, June 2006, page 17).

The Red Mass, a traditional ceremony for the legal profession since the 13th century, will be attended by judges of the 18th Circuit, members of the DuPage County Bar Association and political figures of all faiths. Participants are asked to wear something red.

At the conclusion of the service, Appellate Justice Robert Byrne will administer an oath of office to all present legal professionals. An optional brunch will follow in the parish center.

There is no charge to attend the Red Mass, but reservations for the brunch, at $50 per person, must be made in advance by calling Eddie Wollenberg, (630) 668-2415.
