LAP volunteer training is Nov. 27 in Collinsville The Lawyers' Assistance Program will conduct a volunteer training session from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, in the Gateway Center, Collinsville. Lawyers and judges who want to help colleagues deal with alcohol and drug dependencies and mental problems are invited to attend at no cost and hear about LAP services that include interventions and peer counseling. Participants will learn how to identify a problem early and discover tools for handling it effectively before an individual's career at the bar or on the bench becomes in jeopardy. Morning sessions include an overview of LAP, substance addictions, mental health issues, family dynamics and denial. Luncheon, with a guest speaker, will be provided. Afternoon breakout sessions are on peer assistance and the role of the judge volunteer. A session on the intervention process, and a role play, will follow. Space is limited, and advance registration is required. Call (312) 726-6607 or (800) LAP-1233. Funded through a portion of the annual Illinois attorney registration fee, the Lawyers' Assistance Program since 1980 has provided confidential assistance to afflicted lawyers, judges, law students and members of their families. Founded by the Illinois State Bar and Chicago Bar Associations, the LAP board consists of members appointed by the Supreme Court.
