Seminar goal is enhancing trust of media, public In a time when judges, lawyers and the legal system are under increasing scrutiny in the news media, communicating effectively with the public is an important job for those who speak for the profession. An ISBA-Illinois Judges Association program, “Delivering the Message: How to Make Sure the Public ‘Gets It,'” will be presented Friday, Dec. 9, from 10:15 to 11:45 a.m. during the joint meeting at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel. The program will be presented as a training seminar aimed at helping lawyers and judges to be effective in public speaking engagements and media interviews. Judge Mark Drummond of Quincy, author of “The Eight Keys to the Art of Persuasion,” will offer tips for improving public understanding and trust in the judicial system by speaking before a variety of audiences, from business groups to school children. ARDC chief counsel James J. Grogan and 19th Circuit Judge Raymond McKoski of the Illinois Judicial Ethics Committee, will explain how judges and lawyers may respond ethically to the media and help them deliver accurate accounts of court cases and procedures. Also speaking on effective communication through the media will be Bernard M. Judge, editor and publisher of the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin and Chicago Lawyer magazine. During the seminar, an award will be presented to Chief Justice Robert R. Thomas of the Illinois Supreme Court for his efforts in promoting civility in the legal profession.
