Bars raise disaster funds In addition to the Illinois State Bar Association/Illinois Bar Foundation Legal Relief Fund (see page 3 for details), which has exceeded $20,000, several other bar associations and law firms have raised money for the benefit of families and organizations affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The Sangamon County Bar Association collected $12,415, in addition to what members and firms have contributed individually, in support of relief work being done by the American Red Cross (see photo below). An appeal by the Lake County Bar As-sociation resulted in donations totaling $8,320 to the Lake County Bar Foundation in a short period of time. The money was sent to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. The Winnebago County Bar Association Community Service Committee raised several hundred dollars to assist hurricane victims who have relocated to the Rockford area. Four matrimonial law firms conducted a softball tournament that raised money for the Red Cross. The team of Schiller, DuCanto & Fleck, with Stewart Auslander as captain, won the round robin competition. The Schiller firm defeated Berger Schatz 14-9 in the first round, and Beerman, Swerdlove, Wolshin, Barezky, Becker, Jernin & London 13-10 in the final. Berger Schatz topped Nadler, Pritikin & Mirabelli 10-8 to take third place. The umpires were Cook County Judges William S. Boyd, Edward R. Jordan and Timothy P. Murphy, and retired judge Frank A. Gembala. Event planners for the firms were Jason Sposeep, Charles Philips, Lawrence Hirsch and Tania Gray. In Springfield, the daughter of ISBA staff member Becky Havrilka and five friends collected $1,175 for the Red Cross in two days at a video store parking lot. Children of staffer Ann Boucher donated a box of toys, books and craft items for kids in Louisiana who lost everything. |
