Postal Service honors lawyers

Chicago attorneys George N. Leighton and William H. Hooks participated in two recent commemorative events held by the U.S. Postal Service.

Leighton, a retired federal judge and Laureate of the ISBA Academy of Illinois Lawyers, was honored in his hometown of New Bedford, Mass., on Sept. 18, when the main post office was dedicated in his name. The courtyard of the school he attended there was named for him last year.

Keynote speaker at the post office dedication was Pedro Pires, president of Cape Verde, where Leighton's parents lived be-fore immigrating to Massachusetts.

Hooks was a guest speaker Aug. 30 at the Harold Washington Cultural Center in Chicago for the unveiling of a civil rights milestones postage stamp in the series, “To Form a More Perfect Union.”

The stamp commemorates the 1948 executive order by President Harry S Truman that mandated full integration of all branches of the armed services.

A retired Marine Corps lieutenant, Hooks is a life member of the Marine Corps League and its Chicago Police chapter. He is past president of the Cook County bar Association and Chicago chapter of the Federal Bar Association.
