Federal judge to provide view on asylum cases

Judge Diane Wood of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit will provide a judge's perspective on review of asylum cases during an ISBA Law Ed Series seminar on Friday, Nov. 11, in the Chicago Regional Office.

The seminar, “Presenting an Asylum Case: Tips for Trial and Judicial Review,” will be conducted by the International and Immigration Law Section with co-sponsorship by the Bench and Bar, Federal Civil Practice and Human Rights Sections, and the Young Lawyers Division.

Julie E. Boyd or Richardson & Stasko, Chicago, chair of the International and Immigration Law Section Council, is program coordinator. The schedule follows.

9 a.m. – Being Successful at Trial in the Administrative Court: The Nuts, Bolts and Credibility Issues. Speakers include section council member Patrick M. Kinnally of Kinnally, Krentz, Loran, Hodge & Herman, Aurora.

Others are Immigration Judge Robert D. Vinikoor, an adjunct professor at the Loyola University School of Law, and assistant U.S. attorney Sheila McNulty of Chicago.

10:20 a.m. – A Survey of Asylum Case Law and Impact of the Recent Real ID Act, with section council vice chair Scott D. Pollock of Chicago.

11 a.m. – A View from the Bench: Judicial Review and Its Ups and Downs, with Judge Wood, Judge Vinikoor and retired Cook County judge Sheila M. Murphy of Rothschild, Barry & Meyers, Chicago.
