Curriculum Jesse Jackson to give NIU Law lecture Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, founder of the Rain-bow/PUSH Coalition, will deliver the second annual Marla Dickerson Public Interest Lecture for the Northern Illinois University College of Law at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, in the Altgeld Hall auditorium. The free lecture series is funded by a donation from the family of Marla Dickerson, a former law student who died in a 1994 airplane crash. Homecoming for UI alums The University of Illinois College of Law has scheduled two Homecoming weekend events in Champaign on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 21-22. The first is a reunion reception at 6 p.m. Friday at the Lincolnshire Fields Country Club that includes a Distinguished Alumni Award program. The return of alumni from classes every five years since 1945 will be celebrated. A tailgate barbecue at 3 p.m. Saturday on Cribbet Field, just west of the law building, will precede the 6 p.m. varsity football game between Illinois and Penn State. SIU slates moot court The Southern Illinois University School of Law will conduct its Health Law Moot Court Competition on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 11-12. Call (618) 453-8858. The law school plans to hold holiday alumni receptions Wednesday, Dec. 7, in St. Louis, and Thursday, Dec. 8, in Springfield. Another will take place Friday, Dec. 9, during the ISBA Midyear Meeting at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel. Lawyers become trustees Attorneys Cherilyn G. Murer of Homer Glen and Marc J. Strauss of DeKalb have been appointed to the board of trustees of Northern Illinois University. Attorneys Barbara Giorgi Vella of Rockford and Myron E. Siegel of Bannockburn were reappointed. Vella, a partner in Vella & Lund and graduate of the NIU College of Law, was elected chair of the board. • • • Belleville attorney Stephen R. Wigginton has been appointed to the board of trustees of Southern Illinois University for a term that ends Jan. 17, 2011. He is a partner in Weilmuenster & Wigginton. Fellowships announced Three law students from Illinois schools have been awarded Equal Justice Works Fellowships for two-year assignments with not-for-profit organizations that provide legal representation to low-income clients and advocacy in precedent-setting litigation. Gregory Beck of the University of Illinois College of Law will work with the Public Citizen Litigation Group in Washington, D.C.; Shannon Jones of the University of Chicago Law School with the Corporation for Supportive Housing in Chicago, and Laura Townsend of the Northwestern University School of Law with the National Center for Youth Law in Oakland, Calif. In addition, the Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago will have the assistance of fellowship recipient Lorraine Lopez of the Tulane University School of Law. The fellows receive salaries and benefits, and are eligible for a law school debt repayment assistance program. The goal of the initiative is to provide access to the justice system for people who could not otherwise afford legal help. Established in 1986 as the National Association for Public Interest Law, Equal Justice Works is funded by contributions from law firms, corporations, foundations and a matching grant from the Open Society Institute.
