Lake County Bar trains Capital Litigation Bar

The Lake County Bar Association and 19th Judicial Circuit have received accreditation to conduct a Capital Litigation Training Program for prosecutors and defense attorneys in death penalty cases.

A two-day training program has been scheduled Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 9 and 10, at the Harrison Conference Center in Lake Bluff. Call (847) 244-3143 to register.

The program will meet all educational requirements of Supreme Court Rule 714(b) (4)(i) and (g) and has been approved by the court's Committee on Capital Cases and the Administrative Offices of the Illinois Courts.

Chief Judge Christopher C. Starck will open the first-day program at 8 a.m. with an overview of Rule 714. Topics and speakers that will follow are:

Case Management Issues, Judge Victoria A. Rossetti; Sentencing Issues, George D. Strickland and David P. Brodsky; Capital Litigation, Nadine Jakubowski; Jury Selection, Judge Daniel M. Locallo, and Mental Health Issues, Appellate Justice Thomas E. Callum. A presentation by the Capital Litigation Trust Fund is included.

The program for day two, beginning at 8 a.m., includes the following: DNA Issues, Ken Pfoser of the Northern Illinois Police Crime Lab; Ballistics and Arson, John Rotunno of ATF; Forensic Issues and Pathology, Nancy Jones, and Post Trial Considerations, Justice Callum.

Rooms are available in the Harrison Center at a reduced group rate. The registration fee of $250 includes continental breakfast and gourmet buffet lunch each day, hot and cold beverages and snacks, and a reception at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday sponsored by Thomson West.

CCBA has ethics lecture series

The Cook County Bar Association started its fourth annual monthly series of free lectures on ethics and professionalism with a Sept. 22 presentation by Cook County Board President John H. Stroger Jr.

The next lectures are Thursdays, Oct. 20, with Benedict Schwarz II, chair of the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission, and Nov. 17 with Kimball R. Anderson of Winston & Strawn.

Illinois CLE Institute

An Illinois Institute for Continuing Education seminar, “Illinois' New Workers' Compensation Law 2005” will be presented Thursday, Oct. 20, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Springfield. Call (800) 252-8062.

Kim E. Presbrey of Aurora, a member of the ISBA Board of Governors and past president of the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association, will present the petitioner's perspective.

The IICLE and Illinois chapter of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys will conduct an Elder Law Short Course on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 3-4, at Hamburger University on the McDonald's Campus in Oak Brook.

Speakers include Susan Dawson-Tibbits, chair of the ISBA Elder Law Section Council, and council members Charles A. LeFebvre, Ford C. June and Steven C. Perlis.

Several active ISBA members are faculty members for a two-day IICLE Real Estate Short Course that will be conducted Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 15-16, at Hamburger University on McDonald's Oak Brook campus.
