Find out more about MCLE at isba.org

When exactly does the MCLE requirement take effect? Can you earn CLE credits by writing articles for legal publications? Can you carry hours earned in one reporting period forward to the next?

Welcome to the brave new world of Illinois MCLE. (Oh, and did you know the “M” stands for “minimum,” not “mandatory”?) To help you get your bearings, the ISBA CLE Department has prepared a list of answers to frequently asked questions – an FAQ, in geek parlance – about the continuing legal education requirements. The FAQ also contains links to the supreme court rules governing MCLE and other official resources. You'll find it on our home page or by going directly to http://isba.org/mclefaq.html.

A number of questions don't have definitive answers, of course, and won't until the yet-to-be-formed MCLE Board fills in the framework built by the new rules. Where there's no “final answer,” we offer informed speculation.

The new MCLE rules allow lawyers to earn credits via distance learning and we've already begun work on creating convenient and affordable options to live programming. Watch for more in the coming months.
