5K turkey run is benefit for Junior Police camps

The Central Illinois Women's Bar Association will conduct a 5K Turkey Run next month in Springfield's Washington Park to raise funds for the Junior Police Academy.

Proceeds will support six one-week summer camp sessions for at-risk youths, a three-year-old program that focuses on building character and better relationships with law enforcement officers.

Most of the participants come from homeless environments or extremely low-income families, and otherwise would have no opportunities to attend camping programs. Previous grants have expired.

The CIWBA runners will start the course at 8 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, at a cost of $30 per person toward the goal of $47,000. To sign up or get more information, call JPA coordinator Robin Dowis at (217) 753-5764, ext. 357.
