Curriculum Chicago-Kent sculpture lauds judicial service “Iustitiam Servaverunt” (in the service of justice), a stainless steel sculpture that honors alumni of the Chicago-Kent College of Law who have served as judges, was unveiled Sept. 18 on the first floor of the school. The work by Lauren Gray includes important legal expressions in 31 languages and the names of more than 200 alumni in the judiciary. The list begins with Carl L. Rasch, an 1890 graduate who served on U.S. District Court in Montana, and includes Judge Ilana D. Rovner of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit and Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne Burke. Chicago-Kent was established in 1888 by appellate justices Joseph M. Bailey and Thomas A. Moran. Bailey served subsequently as chief justice of the Illinois Supreme Court.
Alums, students gather The John Marshall Law School will hold its third annual student/alumni exchange reception from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, at the Union League Club of Chicago. U.I. law alums lauded The University of Illinois College of Law will hold an alumni luncheon Thursday, Nov. 16, at the University Club of Chicago. Galowich of Initiate Systems, and Daniel I. Schlessinger of Lord, Bissell & Brook. DSAs also were presented Oct. 6 in Champaign to Thomas R. Lamont, former chair of the university board of trustees; Phyllis J. Holmen of the Georgia Legal Services Program, and Jaime L. Torres, owner of a sports management company.
Scholarship presented Justin E. Bauer, a third-year student at the Northern Illinois University College of Law, has received the 2006-07 Lowell H. Jacobson Memorial Scholarship from the American Counsel Association. The presentation ceremony on Sept. 29 at the Chicago Bar Association was conducted by ACA President Tom Bolt. The award is named in memory of a Chicago attorney who was a president of the association.
News about faculty DePaul University Law Prof. Barbara Bressler is the new director of the law school's nationally recognized Center for Intellectual Property Law and Information Technology (CIPLIT). She succeeds Roberta R. Kwall, who will continue to teach IP courses. A DePaul law graduate, Bressler established a CIPLIT clinical program as the first in the country to provide legal services to artists, musicians, inventors and authors. • • • Associate Prof. Alberto Coll of the DePaul University College of Law has been named president of the university's International Human Rights Law. He succeeds M. Cherif Bassiouni, who was president for 16 years. • • • Gregory Shaffer was inducted Sept. 11 as the first Wing-Tat Lee Chair of International and Comparative Law at the Loyola University School of Law.
SIU recruits in Alaska As Dean Peter C. Alexander of the Southern Illinois University School of Law is aware, Alaska is the only state that has no law school, so it is fertile territory for recruitment. Alexander made the 3,000-mile trip to Anchorage and Fairbanks last month to visit with students at campuses of the University of Alaska, and to make power-point presentations about law school opportunities at SIU. |
