Immigration, sex registration issues on fall defender agenda

Champaign County public defender Randall Rosenbaum, a member of the ISBA Criminal Justice Section Council, will preside during the annual fall seminar of the Illinois Public Defender Association on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 20-21, at the Hilton Hotel, Springfield.

Highlights include elections and an award presentation to U.S. Sen. Richard Durbin of Springfield. Rosenbaum, who is IPDA President, will open the program at 12:30 p.m. Friday with welcoming remarks.

Presentation topics on Friday afternoon include Immigration Issues, by Geoffrey Heeren of the Legal Assistance Foundation, and Sex Registration Issues, by Dorene Kuffer, chief of the Cook County public defender's Juvenile Justice Division.

David Bergschneider, legal director of the Office of State Appellate Defender will provide a Federal and State Case Law Update, and Rosenbaum will be moderator of a Roundtable on Ethical Issues.

Election of IPDA officers and board members at 5 p.m. Friday precede a reception and the dinner at which Durbin will receive the Gideon Award for supporting a loan forgiveness program for public defenders.

Saturday morning programs, beginning at 9 a.m., are Department of Correction Issues, with chief legal counsel Edward Huntley, and Innovations in Jury Trials, with Bob Miller and John Casey of the DuPage County public defender's office.

Cook County assistant public defender Stephen W. Baker, a member of the ISBA Criminal Justice Section Council will conclude the seminar with a Legislative Update.
