Curriculum Illinois law alumni planning October Homecoming events Alumni of the University of Illinois Col-lege of Law from years ending with 1 or 6 have been invited to a pair of Homecoming weekend events Friday and Saturday, Oct. 6-7, in Champaign. Distinguished Alumni Awards will be presented at 7 p.m. From 8:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, a brunch will be available in a tent on Cribbet Field, north of the Law Building. The Illinois-Indiana varsity football game is scheduled for an 11 a.m. kickoff.
Colby speaks at SIU William H. Colby, senior fellow with the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization in Washington, D.C., will give the Dr. Arthur Grayson Distinguished Lecture at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, in the Southern Illinois University School of Law Auditorium. Colby's topic is “From Cruzan to Schiavo: Lessons Learned.” He represented the family of Nancy Cruzan in the first right-to-die case heard in the U.S. Supreme Court, and is the author of two books on the subject. A reception will follow his presentation.
Blanchard lecture set James J. Blanchard, former governor of Michigan, will give the Vacketta-DLA Piper Lecture on the Role of Government and the Law at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, in the Max L. Rowe Auditorium at the University of Illinois College of Law. Blanchard joined DLA Piper's Wash-ington, D.C., office in 1996 after three years as U.S. ambassador to Canada. He chairs the Government Affairs Practice. Michigan's governor from 1983 to 1991, Blanchard was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1975 to 1983. He has chaired the Democratic Governors Association and the National Democratic Platform Committee.
Bahr greets SIU class ISBA President Irene F. Bahr will be guest speaker when first-year students at the Southern Illinois University School of Law are inducted and receive scales-of-justice pins on Friday, Oct. 6. The student induction ceremony will include response to an oath of professionalism administered by Illinois Supreme Court Justice Lloyd Karmeier. At 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, an SIU law alumni meeting is scheduled in the formal lounge. An 11 a.m. tailgate party will precede the 1:30 p.m. football game between SIU and Western Illinois University. After the game, a student-alumni networking event will begin at 5 p.m. in the Career Service Center, and a fall Cajun Fest gathering will take place at 6 p.m. on the law school front lawn.

Animal abuse explored A seminar on “Punishment and Sen-tencing of Animal Abusers” will be presented from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, at the DePaul University Center in downtown Chicago. The sponsors are DePaul's Animal Law Program and the International Institute for Animal Law. The speakers are Judge Michael Cicco-netti of Ohio, president of the American Judges Association; assistant U.S. attorney Steve Kaufman of the Western District of Pennsylvania, and Dana Campbell, managing senior attorney with the Animal Legal Defense Fund Criminal Cruelty Division.
