Two workers' comp seminars on Monday, Oct. 9

Two presentations of the ISBA Law Ed seminar, “Workers' Compensation: Back to Basics,” will take place from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9. The locations are the Chicago Athletic Association and the Gateway Center in Collinsville.

Six past presidents are trial practice panelists for ISBA Master Series

A pantheon of six past presidents of the Illinois State Bar Association will serve as dis---tinguished faculty members for an ISBA Master Series seminar on Trial Practice next month.

Scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, in the Holiday Inn City Centre, Chicago, the program is coordinated by past president Terrence K. Hegarty of Hegarty & Heath, Chicago.

Moderators are Hegarty and past president Cheryl I. Niro of Chicago, executive director of the Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism. Niro will open the seminar with welcoming remarks and introductions.

At 9:15 a.m., Brian C. Fetzer of Johnson & Bell, Chicago, will discuss Voir Dire, including large-screen and computer exhibits.

Real Estate Law Section schedules pair of updates in Bloomington, Lombard

Lawyers to be drilled during boot camp on Microsoft Word, Excel applications

A two-day ISBA legal technology boot camp will be conducted Thursday and Friday, Oct. 5-6, on the Northern Illinois University campus in Rockford, and will be repeated Nov. 30-Dec. 1 at The Chateau in Bloomington.

The programs for attorneys, paralegals, secretaries and other staff members will be conducted by Richard A. Kinner of Springfield, a professional computer training instructor.

Day one will be devoted to Microsoft Word for Legal Applications. Day two will be on Microsoft Excel for Legal Applications, with advanced tips and tricks for both Word and Excel.

The focus will be on features in the XP and 2003 versions of Excel and Word. Because of the anticipated size of the audience, this will not be a hands-on program, but participants may bring their own laptops to follow the speaker's examples.

The presentation by the ISBA Committee on Legal Technology is coordinated by Steven L. Dunn of Springfield, the state bar association's director of information technology.

Thursday discussions on Microsoft Word include page set-up as required by Illinois Supreme Court Rules 341 and 344, text vs. paragraph formatting, and tables, mail merge, toolbars, macros, line numbering, custom forms, and outline view.

Also redlining and tracking changes, templates and styles, footnotes and endnotes, page breaks and section breaks, and the “autos” (AutoCorrect and AutoText).

Friday morning discussions of Micro-soft Excel include formulas and functions, cell formatting, page set-up, sorting and filtering, data validation, hiding and protecting worksheets, and grouping and subtotals.

On Friday afternoon, advanced tips and tricks for Word include the following:

Bookmarks and cross references, tables of contents and case captions, linking and embedding excel worksheet data, and electronic filing and changing Word to comply with filing rules.

Advanced tips and tricks for Excel are creating macros, custom AutoFill lists, and creating custom templates.

Seminar fees for ISBA members are $140 for attendance on either day, or $240 for both days.

Fees for additional ISBA members or support staff members from the same firm are $100 each for one day and $160 for both days. New bar admittees pay only $15 to attend.

Fees for non-members are $200 for either day and $450 for both days; additional non-member registrants are $200 each per day or $350 for both days.

Non-disclosure issues reviewed

The ISBA Intellectual Property Section will present the Law Ed luncheon seminar, “To Disclose or Not to Disclose: The Benefits (and Limitations) of Non-Disclosure Agreements,” at 12 noon Monday, Oct. 9, at the Chicago Regional Office.

A panel will discuss nuts and bolts of non-disclosure agreements, when they may be appropriate, their limitations in business transactions, and key provisions to be aware of. Sample non-disclosure agreements will be provided.

Panelists include Steven L. Baron of Man-dell Menkes, Chicago, who also is program coordinator. Others are section council vice chair Eugene F. Friedman of Friedman & Friedman, Chicago, and newsletter editor Daniel L. Keegan of Kegan & Kegan, Chicago.

ISBA Environmental Law Conference slated in October

The Illinois State Bar Association will conduct a 2006 Environmental Law Conference on Friday, Oct. 27, at the Holiday Inn City Centre, 300 E. Ohio, Chicago.

Presented by the ISBA Environmental Law Section, and co-sponsored by the Chicago Bar Association, the Law Ed seminar is coordinated by section council chair Eugene P. Schmittgens of Lathrop & Gage, St. Louis.

The conference will open at 8 a.m. with a one-hour networking breakfast, followed at 9 a.m. by a plenary session and overview.

Bankruptcy panel is timely

A timely ISBA Law Ed seminar on bankruptcy reform follows recent news that bankruptcy filings in federal court dropped 9.3 percent in the year ending June 30, to the lowest level since 2001.

In the Northern District of Illinois, filings decreased 7.7 percent from 56,591 on July 1, 2005, to 52,251 at the end of June.

The ISBA Commercial, Banking and Bankruptcy Law Section will present the seminar, “Bankruptcy Reform in Practice: One Year After Passage,” from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 22, of the Rockford campus of Northern Illinois University.
