Kane lawyers pick flick

The Kane County Bar Foundation will hold a benefit Legal Movie Festival at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, in the historic Arcada Theater, St. Charles.

The featured film is “To Kill a Mock-ingbird,” chosen by 37 percent of Kane County lawyers as their favorite of all time. Others included “My Cousin Vinny” (21%) and “Twelve Angry Men” (13%).

Survey winners will be announced at the event for Favorite Performance by an Actor in the Role of Attorney, in the Role of Judge, in the Roles of a Client or other Non-Attorney.

Gymnast addresses scholars

Former Olympic gymnast Dominique Dawes of Maryland will be featured speaker for the Women's Bar Foundation's annual benefit scholarship luncheon and law student presentations on Thursday, Oct. 12, at the Chicago Hilton Hotel.

Dawes, who pursued a career in acting and modeling after her athletic achievements, is an advocate for equality among women and minorities, and self-esteem for women and girls.

Called “Awesome Dawesome” by her coach and teammates, she received gold and bronze medals in the 1996 Olympics and appeared on a Wheaties cereal box with her team. Dawes will celebrate her 30th birthday on Nov. 20.

Women hold 5K chase

The Women's Law Society at the University of Illinois College of Law will hold its fourth annual 5K benefit Ambulance Chase at 9 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, at Crystal Lake Park, Urbana.

Enters leukemia marathon

St. Louis attorney Elena Barrio, a member of the Illinois bar, will participate in the 13-mile Nike Women's Half Marathon on Sunday, Oct. 22, in San Francisco, to raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Barrio, whose father died of leukemia in May, has been training with the society's Gateway chapter that includes Southern Illinois in its research-funding area.

Cabrini Clinic celebrates

The Cabrini Green Legal Clinic will hold its annual benefit dinner, “Through Their Eyes: Reflections of Hope,” at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, in the International Ballroom North of the Chicago Hilton Hotel.
