Public defenders to honor Sen. Durbin at fall event The Illinois Public Defender Association will conduct its annual fall seminar on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 20-21, at the Hilton Hotel, Springfield. Welcoming remarks will be given at 12:30 p.m. Friday by IPDA President Randall Rosenbaum, Champaign County public defender and member of the ISBA Criminal Justice Section Council. Friday afternoon presentations will be made on Immigration Issues, by Geoffrey Heeren of the Legal Assistance Foundation, and Sex Registration Issues, by Dorene Kuffer, chief of the Cook County public defender's Juvenile Justice Division. David Bergschneider, legal director of the Office of State Appellate Defender will provide a Federal and State Case Law Update, and Rosenbaum will be moderator of a Roundtable on Ethical Issues. At 5 p.m. Friday, IPDA officers and board members will be elected. A reception and dinner will follow. U.S. Sen. Richard Durbin of Springfield will receive the IPDA Gideon Award for his tireless work on a loan forgiveness program for public defenders. Saturday morning programs, beginning at 9 a.m., are Department of Correction Issues, with chief legal counsel Edward Huntley, and Innovations in Jury Trials, with Bob Miller and John Casey of the DuPage County public defender's office. The seminar will close with a Legislative Update by Cook County assistant public defender Stephen W. Baker, a member of the ISBA Criminal Justice Section Council.
