Mental Health Code
Section 3-816(a) of Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Code provides that final orders "shall be accompanied by a statement on the record of the court's findings of fact and conclusions of law." That provision is directory, rather than mandatory. A respondent's appeal rights and liberty interests will not generally be injured through a directory reading of that section. A respondent does not have a right to notice of the trial court's reasoning for order authorizing involuntary treatment. (GARMAN, FREEMAN, THOMAS, KILBRIDE, KARMEIER, and BURKE, concurring.)
