Attorneys do not work alone in representing clients. They work in collaboration with other attorneys, paralegals and legal secretaries, all of whom are instrumental in effective representation. These other legal professionals help do research, receive confidential information from and communicate with clients, help prepare pleadings and transactional documents, and much more. But when an attorney works with other legal professionals, it raises several important ethical issues. This program will cover the standards of supervisory care of attorneys supervising other attorneys, paralegals and legal secretaries. The program will discuss specific issues related to paralegals and secretaries receiving and handling confidential client information, preserving the attorney-client privilege, the competence of those to whom work is delegated, and workload and billing issues, among others.
Highlights:
- Ethics issues for attorneys supervising other attorneys, paralegals and legal secretaries
- Issues for senior attorneys supervising associates and and in-house counsel supervising private practitioners
- Special ethics issues for attorneys working with paralegals and legal secretaries, including preserving the attorney-client privilege
- Specific ethical issues related to competence, work load, billing practices, confidentiality and the attorney-client privilege
- Best ethics practices for law firms with paralegals
