ISBA LISTSERVER POLICY

INTRODUCTION

Welcome to the ISBA transactional law discussion group, which is open to all members of the Illinois State Bar Association and to any transactional-law-related topic. Now that "colleague down the hall" can be anywhere from South Beloit to Chicago to Springfield to Cairo. We hope you'll learn something -- and that you'll share what you know with others.

By joining and using ISBA's e-mail lists, you agree that you have read and will follow the rules set for these peer discussion groups.  You also agree to reserve list discussions for topics best suited to the medium.  You also agree to reserve list discussions for the topic or topics listed above.

List messages are for the use of ISBA members only and may not be distributed to non-ISBA members without the permission of the Illinois State Bar Association.

This list is not moderated, and your messages will not be screened before you send them.  However, as with any community, there are guidelines governing behavior on the listserver.

RULES FOR LISTSERVE

Violating antitrust regulations, selling, or marketing are not permissible.  Please take a moment to acquaint yourself with the guidelines listed below.  If you have questions, contact the list manager noted in your welcome instructions.  ISBA reserves the right to suspend or terminate membership on all lists for members who violate these rules.

  1. The discussions on the lists are meant to stimulate conversation not to create contention.  Do not challenge or attack others.  Let others have their say, just as you may.

  2. All defamatory, abusive, profane, threatening, offensive, or illegal materials strictly prohibited.  Do not post anything in a listserver message that you would not want the world to see or that you would not want anyone to know came from you.  Remember that ISBA and other e-mail list participants have the right to reproduce postings to this listserver.

  3. Do not post commercial messages.  The cyberspace term for this is spamming.  Contact people directly with products and services that you believe would help them.

  4. Use caution when discussing products. Information posted on the lists is available for all to see, and comments are subject to libel, slander, and antitrust laws.

  5. Do not post any information or other material protected by copyright without the permission of the copyright owner.

  6. Messages should not be posted if they encourage or facilitate members to arrive at any agreement that either expressly or impliedly leads to price fixing, a boycott of another's business, or other conduct intended to illegally restrict free trade.  Messages that encourage or facilitate an agreement about the following subjects are inappropriate:  prices, discounts, or terms or conditions of sale; salaries; profits, profit margins, or cost data; market shares, sales territories, or markets; allocation of customers or territories; or selection, rejection, or termination of customers or supplies; or potential violation of current antitrust laws.

Members who violate these rules are subject to removal from the list.

SENDING A MESSAGE TO THE LIST

To post to the list via e-mail, send your message to isba-transactional@list.isba.org.  To post via the Web, use the list Web page at http://www.isba.org/Discussions/.  If you use the e-mail method, you can only post from the e-mail address at which you are subscribed (e.g., if you receive messages at e-mail address A at work, you can't post messages from e-mail address B at home).

Note:  The footer of every list message tells you how to remove yourself from and send a message to the list.  Here's more about getting the most out of your list membership.

LISTSERVER ETIQUETTE

Include a signature tag on all messages.  Include your name, affiliation, location, and e-mail address

State concisely and clearly the specific topic of the comments in the subject line.  This allows members to respond more appropriately to your posting and makes it easier for members to search the archives by subject.

Include only the relevant portions of the original message in your reply, delete any header information, and put your response before the original posting.

Only send a message to the entire list when it contains information that everyone can benefit from.

Send messages such as “thanks for the information” or “ me, too” to individuals—not to the entire list.  Do this by using your e-mail application's forwarding option and typing in or cutting and pasting in the e-mail address of the individual to whom you want to respond.

To unsubscribe, send a blank message to unsubscribe-isba-transactional@list.isba.org.  Send the message with no subject header.

To rejoin the list, use the sign-up form on the ISBA Web site at http://www.isba.org/Discussions/.

Warn other list subscribers of lengthy messages either in the subject line or at the beginning of the message body with a line that says “Long Message.”

CONTACTING ISBA STAFF

If you have questions about the list or your subscription to it, please contact Jean McKnight at webmaster@isba.org.

If you have questions or suggestions for staff, please contact them directly and not via a message to this list.  You'll find a link to staff e-mail addresses under “About the ISBA” on the left-hand blue bar on the ISBA Wes site (the direct URL is http://www.isba.org/Directory/staffdir.asp).

CHANGING FROM NORMAL TO DIGEST MODE OR VICE-VERSA

To change your list settings – say, to get all list messages combined into a single daily digest rather than one at a time – follow the instructions at http://www.isba.org/Discussions/.

VIEWING LIST ARCHIVES

Past messages to this list are preserved and available for you to read on the Web.  What's more, they're organized in a searchable archive so you can type in a keyword (e.g., “WordPerfect”) to find out whether the topic you are interested in has already been discussed.  To view and search old messages, follow the instructions at http://www.isba.org/Discussions/.

CHANGING YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS

If you change your e-mail address, simply subscribe again at your new address on the ISBA Web site at http://www.isba.org/Discussions/.

IF YOU THINK YOU HAVE BEEN UNSUBSCRIBED...

...try signing up again.  Our list software will automatically unsubscribe you if messages bounce at your e-mail address for more that a week, so if your e-mail account has been malfunctioning or you have not received messages for a week or more, try subscribing again.
