The Back to Basics seminar will cover all aspects of a workers’ compensation case from the initial client contact through the appeals process. Topics include the initial client interview, trial preparation, review and appeal of workers’ compensation cases, presenting your case to the commission and the appellate court, and ethical considerations. This course is designed with mid-level workers’ compensation practitioners in mind and will feature a number of top speakers, from attorneys to judges.

9:00 – 10:00 a.m.  Initial Client Interview from the Respondent’s and the Petitioner’s Points of View*
From the respondent’s point of view, our speaker will discuss strategies for accepting an initial case assignment from a client, including how to identify issues, evaluate claim exposure and develop a defense strategy while also using it as an opportunity to build a client relationship for the future. From the petitioner’s perspective, the speaker will talk about the in-take form, what to ask the petitioner, how to fill out the application for an adjustment of the claim, and how to handle typical problems or issues at the initial interview.

In this presentation the speaker will address how to apply the Supreme Court Rules to cases before the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Commission.  It will include an overview of general ethical concerns including competency, scope of representation, diligence, client communication, fees, confidentiality, and conflict of interest as applied to legal practice before the Commission.
