Appellate Lawyers to hear Lincoln-Douglas program

The Appellate Lawyers Association will hold an Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Luncheon at 12 noon Tuesday, Feb. 19, in Corboy Hall at the Chicago Bar Association.

The event includes the presentation, "Stephen A. Douglas and Abraham Lincoln: Friendly Enemies?" by Brooks Davis, past president of the Chicago Civil War Round Table and a member of the advisory committee of the U.S. Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission.

Also chair of the Stephen A. Douglas Association, Davis received the Nevins Freeman Award for lifetime achievement in the field of Civil War studies.

Although Lincoln and Douglas were adversaries in Illinois debates 150 years ago during their campaign for election to the U.S. Senate, their respective legal training and skills helped shape the fate of the nation.

Douglas held Lincoln's hat when he was inaugurated as president, and Lincoln later wept when he learned of Douglas' death.
