Law prof to discuss book during Women's Day lunch
Law professor Martha Nussbaum of the University of Chicago will be keynote speaker for an International Women's Day fair and luncheon on Friday, March 7, at the Union League Club of Chicago. Her topic is "Religion and Equality in American Public Life."
The Ernest Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law and Ethics for the Law School, the Department of Philosophy and the Divinity School, Nussbaum also will discuss her new book, "Liberty of Conscience: In Defense of America's Tradition of Religious Equality."
She is the author of 14 publications, including "Sex and Social Justice," which received an award in 2000 from the North American Society for Social Philosophy.
Copies of "Liberty of Conscience" will be available for purchase and signing during the fair, which begins at 10:30 a.m. An 11:30 a.m. reception will precede the luncheon and program. For reservations at $60 per person, e-mail recep@ulcc.org.
Attorneys are authors
Chicago attorney Laura A. Caldwell launched her new paperback mystery, "The Good Liar" (MIRA Books), on Jan. 23 during a book-signing party. The event took place at Landmark Grill, which is mentioned in the book.
A 1992 graduate of the Loyola University School of Law who teaches advance writing for litigation there as an adjunct professor, Caldwell has published seven original paperbacks and has a contract for three more by 2009.
"The Good Liar" is a well-researched international thriller that explores the inner workings of an underground anti-terrorism organization. It blends secrecy and suspense with trust, love and sex.

Steven J. Harper of Kirkland & Ellis, Chicago, will sign copies of his book, "Straddling Worlds: The Jewish-American Journey of Professor Richard W. Leopold," at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, in The Book Stall, Winnetka.
The biographical work is a tribute to the prominent historian, who was a mentor to Harper. It was released Jan. 28 by Northwestern University Press.
