Not too early to start plans for Law DayBar associations around the country are beginning to make plans to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Law Day, an annual opportunity to focus attention on the community involvement of lawyers. The slogan for Law Day 2008 is "The Rule of Law: Foundation for Communities of Opportunity and Equity," an omnibus theme that encompasses participation in many creative ways. Among Law Day activities often conducted by bar associations are essay and poster contests for school children, and recognition of lawyers for pro bono contributions. Two ISBA section councils – International and Immigration Law, and Human Rights – will sponsor a May 1 program on Darfur, Sudan, at The John Marshall Law School. The Decalogue Society is a co-sponsor. Many associations join the ISBA in offering Ask-a-Lawyer Day telephone call-ins to answer legal questions from the public. These are scheduled to take place on Saturday morning, April 26. The Peoria County Bar Association has announced that its Law Day luncheon on Thursday, May 1, will feature a keynote address by Chief Judge Michael P. McCuskey of U.S. District Court for the Central District. Formerly of Peoria, Judge McCuskey has his chambers in Urbana, where he represents the 6th Circuit as a member of the ISBA Assembly. He also is past chair of the Civil Practice and Procedure Section Council, founding chair of the Federal Civil Practice Section Council and former member of the Criminal Justice and Bench and Bar Section Councils. To be included in future summaries in the ISBA Bar News of bar association Law Day events and programs, send complete information by e-mail to sanderson@isba.org.
