Lawyer's support of music program earns gala award

Chicago attorney Richard A. Sugar was honored Feb. 9 by a north suburban organization of student musical instruction for which he has provided leadership since 1994.

The founder of Sugar, Friedberg & Felsenthal received a Lifetime Service Award from Midwest Young Artists (MYA) during its annual gala at Michigan Shores Country Club in Wilmette.

MYA was only a year old when Sugar became interested in its junior orchestra program, in which his son played the cello. During his 14 years of involvement, the organization has grown from 50 students to more than 600.

He volunteered initially to develop a public relations campaign, and subsequently served as vice president and president. He was instrumental in MYA's acquisition of a rehearsal facility at Fort Sheridan.

"I can think of no better way to secure our future than by giving as many children the opportunity to experience MYA as possible," Sugar said, and by striving to make it the best musical ensemble program in the country.

"MYA uses the power of music to energize children's lives, combining fun, hard work and a sense of camaraderie not found anywhere else," he added.

A 1972 graduate of the University of Chicago Law School, Sugar founded his law firm in 1981. Some of his articles on estate planning and corporate law have been published in the Illinois Bar Journal.
