Foundation Fellows marking silver year of seeking gold

Twenty-five years young and more than a thousand strong, the Fellows of the Illinois Bar Foundation have helped the foundation’s total assets grow from a few thousand dollars to more than three million.

Established in 1983 as a means of providing a revenue stream for the foundation, the Fellows organizers reached out to colleagues for financial commitments toward goals of building an endowment and contributing to charitable endeavors of the bar.

Maurice E. Bone, who was to become an ISBA president in 1990, was president of the Bar Foundation when Roger G. Fein was tapped for service as the first chair of the Fellows.

Fein went on to be president of the Bar Foundation, as did the next two Fellows chairs who followed him: Robert E. Jones and Wilbur F. Pell III.

Currently heading the Fellows are James L. Reichardt of Villa Park, chair; John G. Locallo of Chicago, vice chair, and Elizabeth L. Jensen of Peoria, secretary.

“The legal community has been very generous in supporting this program,” Reichardt wrote in a recent fund-raising brochure. “However, the demand upon the foundation resources continues to outpace contributions."

Charter Fellows a quarter-century ago agreed to make tax-deductible contributions of $1,000 – either all at once or in 10 annual payments of $100 each.

More recently, higher levels of giving were established to recognize ISBA members for extremely generous participation. Among them, as of May 13, are:

Pillars of the Foundation ($25,000) – Joseph A. Bartholomew, Terrence J. Lavin and Russell K. Scott.

Pillars of the Profession ($15,000) – Nicholas J. Bertschy, Cameron B. Clark, Mark D. Hassakis, Thomas Q. Keefe Jr., Stephen M. Komie, Steven B. Levy, Mary L. Milano and Arnold G. Rubin.

There are 11 Diamond Fellows ($10,000), and long lists of Gold Fellows ($5,000) and Silver Fellows ($2,000).
