Networking, MCLE credits featured at fall conference

From 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, through 1:20 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, participants in the fourth annual ISBA Solo and Small Firm Conference will enjoy unmatched opportunities for gaining MCLE credits and networking with colleagues from across the state.

“Expanding Your Network Knowledge and Skills” is the title of this omnibus event at popular Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles.

Three tracks of educational programs – Legal Technology; Effective and Ethical Practice; Substantive Law – will be available in one-hour segments through the three-day conference.

Before, after and in between, there will be time for visiting exhibitor booths in the Mega Center, getting free legal research training in Fastcase, logging on at the Internet café, and visiting friends during luncheon breaks and evening get-togethers.

Thursday, Sept. 4

Registration begins at 11 a.m. in the Mega Center, where FastCase training will be offered from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Breakout MCLE sessions from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m., listed by track, are:

Effective and Ethical Practice – Civility in an Uncivilized World; Designing the Law Office of the Future; The Impaired Lawyer: Striving for Balance in a High Stress Job; Interpersonal Communication Skills for the Lawyer.

Substantive Law – Representing Buyers in Real Estate: Condo and Townhouse Closings; Criminal Defense: Motion Practice; Preparing Your Clients for Immigration’s Interview Proving the Bona Fides of Their Marriage; Win Your Case: Practical Tips on Using the Rules of Evidence.

Friday, Sept. 5

After continental breakfast and registration, beginning at 7:30 a.m. in the Mega Center, there will be an opening plenary session at 8:30 a.m.

Ellen Freedman of the Pennsylvania Bar Association will speak on “Closing and Transitioning Your Practice and Safeguarding Your Clients in the Process.” The presentation is sponsored Bank of America, the ISBA MasterCard and American Express program coordinator.

A break with exhibitors at 9:35 a.m. will be followed by FastCase training from 10:15 to 11:20 a.m. Morning breakout  MCLE sessions at 10:15 a.m. are:

Legal Technology – Finding Diamonds in the Rough: Internet Research; Effective and Ethical Practice – Ensuring Client Satisfaction from Intake Through End of Representation; Substantive Law – HB 1509 Employment Discrimination.

Keynote speakers at the 11:20 a.m. luncheon break are Nerino Petro of the State Bar of Wisconsin and Ross Kodner of Microlaw. Sponsors are Bank of America and GEICO Auto Insurance.
