Bill of Rights awards earned for pro bono
The Constitutional Rights Foundation Chicago will conduct its annual Bill of Rights in Action Awards benefit reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, at the Union League Club.
Three lawyers and four law firms will be honored for pro bono representation of detainee clients who have been incarcerated at Guantanamo Bay.
The lawyers are Thomas Anthony Durkin of Durkin & Roberts, Chicago; Marc D. Falkoff of the Northern Illinois University College of Law, DeKalb, and H. Candace Gorman of Chicago, a past president of the Women's Bar Association of Illinois.
The law firms are Jenner & Block; Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw; Reed, Smith, Sachnoff & Weaver, and Schiff Hardin.
Proceeds help the foundation work with young students to develop critical thinking skills, civic participation and commitment to the rule of law.

The Mitchell A. Mars Foundation, established by colleagues of an assistant U.S. attorney who died of cancer, will hold a benefit golf outing to provide Chick Evans Scholarships. It will take place Monday, Sept. 22, at Cog Hill in Lemont.
