Knox College plans colloquium at debate site in GalesburgIn Galesburg, the site of the fifth debate on Oct. 7, 1858, the Lincoln Studies Center of Knox College will conduct its 23rd annual Lincoln Colloquium, "Commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the Lincoln-Douglas Debates." Scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, the program will be presented with assistance by the Abraham Lincoln Association and Illinois State Historical Society. Other participating organizations are the Lincoln Home Historic Site, the Chicago History Museum, the Indiana Historical Society and the Lincoln Museum in Fort Wayne, Ind. Morning topics include New Perspectives on the Debates, by Douglas L. Wilson, and The Debates Remembered: The Case of Galesburg, by Rodney O. Davis. Both are co-directors of the Lincoln Studies Center. Other presentations are Turning Points in the Galesburg Debate, by Prof. David H. Zarefsky of Northwestern University, and The Little Men Behind the Curtain: The Committees, Connectors and Carpenters Who Made the Lincoln-Douglas Debates Happen, by Prof. Allen C. Guelzo of Gettysburg College. Luncheon will be provided at 12 noon in Seymour Union, where related exhibits by Lincoln collectors and organizations may be viewed. Afternoon sessions are The Debates in American History and Politics, by Douglas Wilson; America in the 1850s, by Emeritus Prof. James M. McPherson of Princeton University, and Electioneering by Debate, by Emeritus Prof. Garry Wills of Northwestern University. The registration fee of $25 includes attendance at all sessions and the luncheon. Since space is limited, registration by Oct. 3 is recommended. History tour plannedIn conjunction with the Lincoln-Douglas debate commemoration at Knox College, the Illinois State Historical Society will conduct a pre-colloquium tour on Friday, Oct. 10. Participants will visit Bishop Hill, historic Knoxville, the Galesburg Railway Museum, Underground Railroad hideaways, and local wineries. A dinner is included. Individual fees that include the Lincoln-Douglas Colloquium described above are $155 for ISHS members and $175 for non-members. For the Friday tour and dinner separately, fees are $125 for members and $135 for non-members. Attendance at only the dinner is $45 for members and $50 for non-members.
