Peoria seminar on vets affairs ends up in air

A four-hour veterans’ affairs seminar on Wednesday, Nov. 12, at the Greater Peoria Airport will conclude with a voluntary two-hour flight aboard a C130 military cargo plane.

It’s too late to sign up for the Peoria County Bar Association program, however, because 75-day advance notice is required to provide security clearance for visitors to the Air National Guard facility where it will take place.

The seminar chair is PCBA President Michael R. Lied of Howard & Howard, vice chair and newsletter editor of the ISBA Labor and Employment Law Section Council.

Part of Lied’s presidential mission is to encourage members to do pro bono or low-cost legal work for service members and their families. Three such matters were handled recently.

Among the eight seminar faculty members is Brian E. Clauss, executive director of the Veterans Legal Support Center at The John Marshall Law School, who serves on the ISBA Committee on Military Affairs.

Also on the panel is Brian F. Johnson of Johnson, Bunce & Noble, a member of the Illinois Bar Journal Editorial Board.

Lied will close the formal program with the 1 p.m. presentation, “Immigration: What to Do when Military Personnel Say ‘I Do’ in Foreign Duty Situations?”

Then it’s up, up and away for the more adventurous attendees, but no MCLE credit while they are in flight.
