ISBA, Land of Lincoln slate pro bono program on divorce
The ISBA Committee on Delivery of Legal Services and the Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation will conduct the Law Ed seminar, “Divorce Basics for Pro Bono Attorneys,” from 1 to 4:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, at the Gateway Center in Collinsville.
A training program for attorneys who don’t usually handle family law matters, the presentation is offered at no charge for those who agree to handle at least one pro bono case during the next year.
Topics include interviewing pro bono clients, basic substantive family law, fee waivers, form pleadings, service of process, representation in court, and sources of assistance. Materials will be provided.
Speakers include Belleville attorney Julie Keehner Katz, a past chair of the ISBA Family Law Section Council, a member of the Committee on Continuing Legal Education and CLE coordinator for the Family Law and Education Law Sections.
Others are Joan A. Spiegel, managing attorney of Land of Lincoln in Alton and member of the Human Rights Section Council; retired judge and pro bono attorney Lola P. Maddox of Edwardsville, and 3rd Circuit Associate Judge Janet R. Heflin, presiding judge of Family Court.
Attendance will be limited to the first 75 applicants. The program also will be available by webcast through Illinois Legal Aid Online.
