Cassel receives Gertz Award at Nov. 19 lunch

The ISBA Human Rights Section and the Blind Services Association will present an Elmer Gertz Award to University of Notre Dame Law Prof. Douglass Cassel during a luncheon at 12 noon Wednesday, Nov. 19, in the Union League Club of Chicago.

For reservations at $75 per person, call (312) 236-0808 or e-mail blindsrvc@aol.com. Sponsorships are also available.

The annual award is presented in memory of Elmer Gertz, the former Chicago civil rights lawyer for whom a posthumous ISBA Medal of Merit was designated after his death in April 2000.

Nina Appel, dean emerita of the Loyola University School of Law and dean for external relations, will be keynote speaker at the luncheon, which will be preceded by an 11 a.m. reception.

Cassel is director of Notre Dame’s Center for Civil and Human Rights and a Notre Dame Presidential Fellow. He has filed several amicus curiae briefs in the U.S. Supreme Court in cases involving the rights of prisoners at Guantanamo.
