Animal seminar set in Grafton

The second ISBA Law Ed seminar conducted by the Animal Law Section will take place from 1 to 5:30 p.m. Friday, June 12, at the Pere Marquette Lodge and Conference Center in Grafton.

Also titled “Hot Topics in Animal Law,” the seminar covers subjects related to the care of horses and livestock, and regulatory issues from forest to farm.

Section council chair Amy A. Breyer of Chicago is program coordinator and moderator. The schedule follows.

1 p.m. – Hold Your Horses! Livestock Liability and You, an update on equine care, barns, wildlife and livestock management with Melissa Maye of the Office of Appellate Defender, Ottawa.

1:30 p.m. – Don’t Get SLAPPed: What to Do if Your Client Gets SLAPPed Upside the Head for Her Views, an overview of Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation lawsuits by Timothy A. Gutknecht of Crowder & Scoggins, Columbie.

2:15 p.m. – Don’t Be Cruel: An Update on Illinois’ Progressive Animal Cruelty Laws, with assistant Madison County state’s attorney Amy Maher of Edwardsville.

3 p.m. – Muzzling Reckless Owners and Neutering Dangerous Dogs, a discussion of public safety laws by Ledy VanKavage, senior legislative analyst for the Best Friends Animal Society, Maryville.

4 p.m. – It’s Not Just Cats and Dogs: Wildlife and Agricultural Issues in Illinois, regulations from forest to farm, with assistant attorney general Jane E. McBride of the Environmental Enforcement Bureau, Springfield, a member of the Environmental Law Section Council.

4:30 p.m. - It’s Okay if Your Client Is a Real Animal. You? Not so Much, with Eugene F. Friedman of Friedman & Friedman, Chicago, a member of the Committee on Professional Conduct.
