Senate confirms Thomas Lamont for Army tasks

Springfield attorney Thomas R. Lamont learned May 18 that the U.S. Senate had unanimously confirmed his nomination by President Obama to become assistant secretary of Army manpower and reserve affairs in the Department of Defense.

Special counsel to the University of Illinois and member of the Institute of Government and Public Affairs, Lamont is a past chair of the University of Illinois Board of Trustees and interim director of the Illinois Board of Higher Education.

He also is a retired colonel of the Army National Guard, in which he served from 1982 to 2007 as a staff judge advocate general.

A 1972 graduate of the University of Illinois College of Law, Lamont has been executive director of the Office of State’s Attorney’s Appellate Defender, director of civil litigation for the Illinois attorney general, and senior legal advisor to the Capital Development Board.

He also has practiced with Brown, Hay & Stephens, Gordon & Glickson, and Altheimer & Gray.

A former ISBA Assembly member, Lamont chaired the ISBA Administrative Law Section Council in 1985-86 and the Committee on Interprofessional Cooperation in 1989-90.
