Scholarships assist worthy students at 13 law schools
Law students at 13 ISBA-affiliated law schools have been awarded Illinois Bar Foundation scholarships for the 2007-08 academic year.
A scholarship committee chaired by Peoria attorney Richard W. Zuckerman reviewed 52 applications from second- and third-year students on the bases of academic standing, financial need, professional experience, law school activities, community involvement and intent to practice in Illinois.
The law schools and their student scholarship recipients follow.
Chicago-Kent: Jill Roberts (3-L), president of the Kent Justice Foundation, editor of the Journal of International and Comparative Law, Public Interest Law Initiative, volunteer for Cabrini Green Legal Aid Clinic, Lawyers’ Committee for Better Housing, Chicago Legal Clinic and Legal Assistance Foundation.
DePaul University: Jennifer M. Saba (3-L), president of American Civil Liberties Union chapter, member of Law Review, volunteer for Employment Project, participant in Illinois Learning Partnership, law clerk for Cook County public guardian, summer associate at Katten Muchin Rosenman.
John Marshall: Nicholas Henry (3-L), founder of Veterans Legal Support Center, president of Military Law Society, advisory member of ISBA Committee on Military Affairs, worked for Navy Legal Service Office, will return to active duty in Marine Corps JAG Corps.
Loyola University: David Holland (3-L), Law Journal student articles editor, active in Public Interest Law Society, Moot Court Team member, taught at Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center, law clerk for Penny Nathan Kahan & Associates, summer intern for Office of State Appellate Defender, judicial extern for Judge Charles P. Kocoras.
Northern Illinois University: Katie E. Eishaugle (3-L), member of Public Interest Law Society and Women’s Law Caucus, intern at Zeke Giorgi Legal Clinic and previously with Racine County district attorney’s office.
Northwestern University: Jennifer L. Hrycyna (3-L), note and comment editor of Journal of Law and Social Policy, Public Interest Law Group member, volunteer at Cabrini Green Legal Aid Clinic, teaching assistant in communication and legal reasoning, summer associate at Latham & Watkins, former Leonard Rubinowitz Fellow at Sargent Shriver Center on Poverty Law.
Notre Dame University: Marie-Therese Mansfield (3-L), vice president of Student Bar Association, executive articles editor of Journal of College and University Law, summer law clerk for U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Indiana, former summer law clerk for Cook County state’s attorney’s Criminal Appeals Division, has master’s degree in industrial and organizational psychology.
Southern Illinois University: Catherine Yargus (3-L), a Taylor Mattis Fellow, president of Women’s Law Forum, volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, staff member at SIU Civil Practice Legal Clinic, group study leader for 1-Ls, law clerk for Webber & Thies and Winters, Brewster, Crosby & Schafer, former clerk for Justice Stephen Spomer.
St. Louis University: Brittany D. Kozal (2-L), member of Women Law Students Association, intern with Blackwell Sanders and Missouri attorney general’s office, former legal secretary for Missouri-American Water Co.
University of Chicago: Lindsey Marcus (3-L), volunteer for Employment Discrimination Clinic, involved in International Fellows Program, summer associate at Winston & Strawn, was Peggy Browning Fund Fellow for Chicago Newspaper Guild, campaign director of Illinois for Health Care, extern for Chicago Law Department, volunteer with Habitat for Humanity in New Orleans, has master’s degree in international relations.
University of Illinois: Collin F. Delaney (3-L), pre-law graduate assistant, managing editor of Illinois Business Law Journal, member of Frederick Green Moot Court Team, summer law clerk for Friedman & Holtz, judicial extern for Justices Anne Burke and Michael Murphy, recent law clerk at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, plans to be an Air Force judge advocate general.
Valparaiso University: Carrie L. Flores (2-L), member of Business Law Society, Women Lawyers Association, Defense Research Institute, Law Review, Moot Court Honor Society, helpline volunteer for Sexual Assault Response Network of Central Ohio, summer associate at Krieg DeVault, has master’s degree in human resources management.
Washington University: Matthew Kopp (3-L), involved in International Humanitarian Law, Global Studies Law Review, Moot Court, 1-L student mentor, summer associate with Polsinelli, Shalton, Flanigan, Suelthaus and Jenner & Block, where he has accepted an employment offer.
