American jury symposium April 9 at NIU“The Modern American Jury” is the topic of the 17th annual Law Review Sym-posium at the Northern Illinois University College of Law. It will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, in Altgeld Hall on the DeKalb campus. Organizers said the topic was chosen “for its staggering importance to the American legal system, along with the increasing amount of discourse relating to its benefits and drawbacks.” The discussion will include issues such as the art and science of jury selection, race-based peremptory strikes, jury nullification, statutory regulations that implement innovations, and the role of the jury in punitive damages. The keynote speaker will be Chief Judge James F. Holderman of U.S. District Court for the Northern District, a member of the ISBA Federal Civil Practice Section Council. Among others are Chief Judge Ann B. Jorgensen of the 18th Circuit, a member of the Bench and Bar Section Council; Chief Judge Clark E. Erickson of the 21st Circuit, and Paula L. Hannaford-Agor, director of the Center for Jury Studies. Panelists from academia are Prof. Stephan Landsman of the DePaul University College of Law and Prof. Nancy S. Marder of the Chicago-Kent College of Law. Rockford attorney Frank A. Perrecone of Ferolie & Perrecone, a member of the Insurance Law Section Council and Committee on Legislation, will participate, along with Lisa Fabiano of his firm.
