Group has collected Lincoln scholarship for 100 yearsThe Abraham Lincoln Association is celebrating its centennial this year. Based in Springfield, it was organized in 1908 as the Lincoln Centennial Association to join national commemoration of Lincoln’s 100th birthday. From 1909 until 1924, the association conducted Lincoln’s birthday observances. From 1924 to 1952, it published periodicals, books and research reports on the life of the 16th president. This tradition of scholarship culminated in 1953 with publication of a landmark eight-volume set, “The Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln.” After a decade of dormancy, the association was reactivated in 1962, primarily to help the state plan and finance restoration of the Old State Capitol. Since then, it has held anniversary symposiums and banquets each Feb. 12 in Springfield with distinguished guest speakers. The association also has supported the collection, printing and dissemination of documents and data about Lincoln’s law practice. It was a co-sponsor of initiation in 1984 of the Lincoln Legal Papers Project. Association plans leading up to the bicentennial next year include placing online “The Collected Works,” “Lincoln Day by Day” and other significant research works. Members receive symposium and banquet invitations, and subscriptions to The Journal of the Abraham Lincoln Association and the quarterly newsletter, For the People.
