Law Day planning materials available on ISBA siteStatewide bar associations are formulating Law Day programs on or about Thursday, May 1, the 50th anniversary of the annual opportunity to focus attention on the community involvement of lawyers. “The Rule of Law: Foundation for Communities of Opportunity and Equity” is the theme for Law Day 2008 and law-related activities that will be generated. Law Day planning materials and activities guides may be obtained from the ISBA Committee on Law Related Education for the Public by accessing http://www.isba.org/Sections/lawday.html. In addition, an Abraham Lincoln coloring book is available online at http://www.isba.org/lre/coloringbook.pdf. Several bar associations will join the ISBA in offering Ask-a-Lawyer Day telephone call-ins to respond to legal questions from the public. These are scheduled Saturday morning, April 26. A May 1 program on the turmoil in Darfur, Sudan, will be held at The John Marshall Law School with sponsorship by the ISBA International and Immigration Law and Human Rights Sections, and the Decalogue Society. Prof. Ralph Ruebner will be moderator of a panel that includes Cook County Judge B. Michael Hyman, JMLS Assistant Prof. Samuel V. Jones, and Southern Illinois University Associate Law Prof. Cindy G. Buys, secretary of the Immigration and Immigration Law Section Council. Thomas P. Sullivan of Jenner & Block, a Laureate of the ISBA Academy of Illinois Lawyers, will be keynote speaker for the Winnebago County Bar Association’s Law Day luncheon. The Peoria County Bar Association will hold its Law Day luncheon on May 1 at the Hotel Pere Marquette, with a keynote address by Chief Judge Michael P. McCuskey of U.S. District Court for the Central District. An ISBA Assembly member, McCuskey is past chair of the Civil Practice and Procedure Section Council and founding chair of the Federal Civil Practice Section Council. The DuPage County Bar Association is planning a Law Day luncheon on Friday, May 2. Nominations will be accepted through March 28 for the Hartman E. Stime Scholarship that will be presented during the program, along with the Liberty Bell and legal aid awards. The DCBA also will participate in organizing and judging mock trial demonstrations for students in grades 6 to 12 on Friday, May 9, at the 18th Circuit Judicial Center in Wheaton. On Saturday, May 3, the St. Clair County Bar Association will hold a 5K Law Day Run/Walk benefit for Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation. Participants will assemble at 9 a.m. at North High and East A. The LaSalle County Bar Association is among many that will conduct mock trials in local schools during Law Week.
