Lincoln medal to Joel Flaum at April fete

Judge Joel M. Flaum of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit will receive one of six Order of Lincoln Medallions given by the Lincoln Academy of Illinois on Saturday, April 26, at Southern Illinois University.

A former chief judge of the circuit, Flaum was selected as a Laureate for “contributions to the betterment of mankind” during his distinguished career.

Appointed to the appeals bench in 1983 after nine years as a U.S. District Court judge, he was chief judge from 2000 to 2006. He had prior service as a first assistant Illinois attorney general and first assistant U.S. attorney.

Chicago attorney John B. Simon will preside during the 6 p.m. convocation in Shryock Auditorium on the Carbondale campus. A 7:30 p.m. reception for the Laureates will precede a banquet and ball.

Also receiving an Order of Lincoln Medallion is Lincoln scholar David Herbert Donald, who was to have been honored last year but was snowbound at the Boston airport.

Winner of two Pulitzer Prizes and author of “Lincoln: A Biography” in 1995, he received a master’s degree and doctorate at the University of Illinois, where he also taught.

Other recipients are William Norwood, Kenneth A. Shaw, Thomas M. Siebel and Irl F. Engelhardt.
