LRE Committee provides bicentennial ideasIn its February-March newsletter, the ISBA Committee on Law-Related Education for the Public has provided a comprehensive, 24-page summary of educational opportunities related to the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. Distributed statewide to school teachers, the newsletter suggests ways the bicentennial next year can be observed during the months leading up to February 2009. Reading programs and classroom activities at all grade levels are included, in addition to community projects such as presenting films about Lincoln and planting commemorative trees. Among geography challenges are the changing locations of our state capital, cities where Lincoln-Douglas debates were held, counties where Lincoln lived or practiced law, and GPS coordinates of significant sites. Segments of the newsletter are devoted to locations of Lincoln sculptures, the proposal for a “Lincoln County,” legislation signed by the 16th president, and major speeches, including the hopes Lincoln expressed in his Second Inaugural Address. Informational Web sites are listed throughout sections of the newsletter. Officers of the LRE committee are the chair, Thomas J. Carlisle of New Berlin; vice chair, 4th Circuit Judge John P. Coady of Taylorville, and secretary, Kimberly J. Anderson of Chicago. For more information, access http://www.isba.org/lre or direct to staff liaison Donna Schechter at mailto:dshechter@isba.org.
